This chapter seemed to be equally about intentionality as it was computers. The author was trying to make a distinction in whether or not computerds could have intentionality or beliefs. this seems like an idea that is hard to get a grip on. Computers would have to have a program that would store information and apply it to any output before it released any reaction. So if a computer were able to hold a conversation, it would have to have some kind of data to base it's expressions on or it would be a shallow meaningless talk. My on intentionality, is that more is needed than just a storage of possible responses for a reply, there needs to be substance to the conversation, emotion, behavior and gestures. It seems to be a far reach to see a machine duplicate the complexities of the human brain. I see the connection of water running downhill and computers simulating the brain. Water has no intentionality though does it? Isn't it just going where gravity is pulling it? It is not using some kind of reasoning to direct it's passage. Aren't computers in the same boat? They are only performing the programs that we are asking them to do. They do not choose what direction of how to handle a situation. Agree or no?

Sun, 08 Aug 2010 19:22:41 -0700 From Cognitive Science to Neuroscience to Neuroeconomics http://mshorey.posterous.com/from-cognitive-science-to-neuroscience-to-neu http://mshorey.posterous.com/from-cognitive-science-to-neuroscience-to-neu I was having a hard time understanding the connection between neuroeconomics and emotion. But this article has made the connection more visible to me. Scientist being unable to probe reward processing, decision making, and social interaction are able to correlate results from neuroeconomics to these areas. In class we talked of having innate response factors built into our brain, like being able to deflect a ball thrown at our face. In the article it is brought up also, in that some of vision processing goes directly to the spinal cord so that we have a predator evasion reaction. This may be true in some more animalistic traits of survival. Another example could be a parent protecting their child by taking on a dangerous situation in the child's place, so the lineage of the family can continue. I wonder, are behavioral experiences fine tuning these innate responses in order to increase chance of survival?

I see how the concepts are being explained, and how they are applied in this country. But do they apply in different cultures? Would someone that looses $20 or have to by another show ticket react the same in the Middle East, Africa, South America as they do in the US? Or would people from those cultures have the same results in picking the cure for the Asian disease as they do in the US? My feeling is that there would be a difference, not sure how big, but do think there would be a difference.

Would this reasoning apply to people that are stubborn? They are those that continue to make the same mistakes over and over again with the same result, does this apply to them in some way? are they experiencing leakage in a negaive context? Or is something else working together with the negative results, like they really want to receuve the wrong result to receive attention?
